Hmm... I think it's better to leave the background available, just have it be so that the winner can change the color when need be.
Transparent graphics are not a walk in the park for most people - it really narrows down how many people can do it. Having boxes is typically burgeoning of more aesthetic works anyways.
Edit: Basically means "having boxes allows for better works of art, usually."
